Did you see people dressing up during October? If you did, this is because the Latinos in Action club at Grantsville High held a spirit week honoring Latino heritage. Latinos in Action is doing a lot more than many people realize.
Latinos in Action or L.I.A. is a club that not everyone knows about, but that does a lot in the school and community. Jocelyn Rodas Gonzalez, junior, and L.I.A. secretary said, “that the purpose of Latinos in Action is to spread more culture awareness about Latinos”. It “gives students the chance to build their leadership and gain service hours.”, said L.I.A President, Carissa Luna-Trujillo.
Latinos in Action isn’t only a club at Grantsville High though. With LIA clubs in 14 states and over 10,000 members, they are influencing people all over to embrace their culture and help their community.
L.I.A. highly empowers club members to succeed and excel in school and life according to the Latinos in Action website. They have three committees which consist of social, professional, and service. Members of the club are split between the committees and then do projects according to their committee.
Some things they have recently done are hold a spirit week celebrating Hispanic heritage as well as put posters around the school with images and quotes from famous Hispanics in history. Along with this, the Latinos in Action club visits elementary schools to tutor kids to help them raise their reading scores.
They plan to go on college tours this year as well as attend a large L.I.A. conference next year and are planning Grantsville Highs, Winter Ball.
According to latinosinaction.org, “Each LIA student gains real-life leadership experience by participating in student-led service, social, and professional committees”. Luna-Trujillo said, “My favorite part of L.I.A is the people in it because they make every little thing worth it!”
