With the new season coming up fast, the team prepares with their open gyms Mondays and Wednesdays. With the lady cowboys going in to try and earn their third consecutive state title and the boys coming in as strong as ever.
Nikki Dong said, “I went to wrestling and fell in love with the sport, and after a few practices I knew this was the sport I wanted to be in.” Nikki is a senior this year and coming up on her third year of wrestling. She joined her sophomore year and took division that year. Unfortunately she fell very sick during state. The next year she came back and took division again and proceeded to win in state as well.
Arlie Jensen is a sophomore this year and she joined the team her freshman year. She joined wrestling because her friends got her to go to an open gym, and she really enjoyed it. In order to prepare for the upcoming season, she joined soccer to keep in shape and has been eating healthier. “It was hard work, but it taught me a lot about determination and working hard. It was not easy getting beat and sometimes I felt like quitting, but it’s after getting beat down that you can finally start winning, it’s actually very satisfying.”
Keagan Sheffield is a junior this year and going onto his second year of wrestling. Keagan describes the sport as hard but rewarding, forcing the wrestlers to get into shape fast. “You can show up and try not to learn and be an okay wrestler, or you can show up ready to learn and be a great wrestler,” Keagan said. He is preparing for the next season by gaining information as fast as he can and keeping his body in shape.
It’s clear that the team has a great love for the sport and a desire to improve each season. With the new season coming up it will be exciting to see what they accomplish.
